Grammatical Gripe #5

There’s little left but gloom and doom
For proper use of “who” and “whom.”
Those using “whom” to show they’re bright
Can never seem to get it right!
The admin, cheerful yet appalling,
Asks politely, “Whom is calling?”
A few applied themselves in school
And say, “Who’s there?” (unlike a fool),
But oh!  What angst the cases cause
When “who” is in a non-main clause!
For then the problem’s even worse,
As in, “whomever reads this verse!”
Yes, “whom” is clearly off its tether.
We ought to drop it altogether!
Our modern brains just haven’t room
For niceties like “who” and “whom.”

oh, scott. some of us didn’t have teachers who could explain this clearly. OK, so now I’m all worried–is it “WHO” or “WHOM?” isn’t there some easy test like “if you can replace ‘whom’ with ‘him’ then whom is right?” you know, something for those of us who aren’t geniuses.
